Samurai Swords
The Katana sword has most often been associated with the Samurai warrior of Japan as the preferred weapon carried into battle. The katana sword has a slight blade curvature and was known for its sharpness and ability to cut in a single motion.
The authentic Japanese sword is made from a specialized Japanese steel that goes through an intensive forging process. The katana gets its gentle curve from quenching during forging, as it is straight prior to quenching.
The blade is then tempered with a coating of clay mixed with ashes and a small portion of rust applied to every surface but the edge of the blade during hardening. The clay and ash mixture provides a heat insulation so that only the blade's edge will be hardened with quenching. The steel is then hardened and then quenched (cooled) quickly so its structure is permanently altered, which results in an extremely strong finished blade.
After the blade is forged it is then sent to be polished. The polish takes between one and three weeks. The polisher uses finer and finer grains of polishing stones until the blade is like glass.
